Directors receive enormous career-making exposure!
Entering SHOOT’s New Directors Showcase can be a big step towards being noticed by the companies that represent directors and the advertising agency creatives and commercial & entertainment producers that can hire directors.

“Being included in the SHOOT New Director Showcase was absolutely brilliant for me, as it tempted the smart people I did not know, but desperately wanted to see my film, into watching it! As a result, I met the guys at Interrogate and Spy Films. It quite literally started a commercial career for me, and that’s the straight truth” says Elizabeth Orne, 2011 SHOOT New Directors Showcase Finalist, Interrogate and Spy Films

“It was quite an honor to be selected to participate in the 2010 SHOOT New Directors Showcase. I am especially humbled to join the ranks of the super creative and innovative directors with whom I share this special honor. Being selected for the showcase affirmed for me the value of my determined effort to create work that’s not just “good enough”, but better than anyone imagined. Thanks for the shot in the arm, SHOOT!” said Varda Hardy, LiveTribe Productions, 2010 New Directors Showcase Finalist

2008 New Directors Showcase Finalist, Harold Einstein, Station Film, said “There are many wonderful phone calls one can receive in life. But I have to say, few feel as good as, ‘Hello, you’ve just been included in SHOOT’s New Directors Showcase.’ Like the chicken and the egg, I’m still not sure which came first: getting to direct good scripts or getting into SHOOT’s New Directors Showcase.”

Jason & Matt Docter, DOCTER TWINS and 2008 New Director Showcase Finalists, said “As directors, we are continually inspired by the imagination of our peers. SHOOT Magazine does a fantastic job of filling our brains with the most exciting, creative ideas of the day and it’s New Director’s Showcase is no exception. We were thrilled and honored to be included in such a highly talented event. It was almost like telling our Grandmother we had won an Academy Award… or two.”

2007 SHOOT New Directors Showcase finalist Nir Bashan said “I have read SHOOT magazine for many years, and being included in the 2007 New Director’s Showcase was truly an honor. SHOOT consistently has an eye out on fresh and exciting new talent, and this showcase does not disappoint. It is one of the finest new talent presentations in our business.”

Honored to be to be included with other new directors in the 2005 showcase, Harry Cocciolo, 2005 New Director Honoree who’s now with Bob Industries, said, “It’s always invigorating to see new work and exchange ideas. The showcase is an ideal opportunity for new directors, industry leaders and agency producers to come together for the first time.”

Indeed SHOOT’s New Directors Showcase has identified many leading artisans over the years, including one who went on to earn a DGA Award nomination as best commercial director of the year, and assorted others who have won industry accolades, including Gold Lions at Cannes and AICP Show honors.

Most importantly, Showcase inclusion has helped numerous directors gain production house affiliations. From our 2011 crop of directors, for example, Elizabeth Orne signed with Interrrogate and Matt Fackrell came aboard the roster of kaboom productions.

So you think you (or somebody you now) may have what it takes to be a hot New Director?

About The New Directors Search / The New Directors Showcase Reel
Each year SHOOT conducts a worldwide search to discover the best up-and-coming directors who, based on their initial work, show promise to soon make major positive contributions to advertising and/or entertainment in its traditional and emerging forms. The search and selection process is conducted by SHOOT’s editorial staff with input from advertising agency creative directors & heads of production, as well as production company heads and established directors. This year’s search was conducted from January 1-April 4th, 2011. Over the years, there have been assorted cases of New Directors Showcase helmers going on to gain industry prominence. Consider David Gray who was in the 2005 Showcase and a year later went on to be nominated for the DGA Award as best commercial director of the year. (Gray was at Hungry Man when included in the ‘05 Showcase and has since moved over to Station Film). And last year Ross Katz won the DGA Award for outstanding achievement in movies for TV/miniseries on the strength of his HBO film Taking Chance, the same film which garnered him inclusion in SHOOT’s ‘08 New Directors Showcase. Also in the ‘08 Showcase was Harold Einstein of Station who shortly thereafter saw three Crest toothpaste spots he directed for Saatchi NY earn a Gold Lion in the Campaign category at Cannes. And Pete Circuitt of The Ebeling Group, another ‘08 Showcase inductee, went on to direct CBS-TV’s half-hour primetime Xmas special Yes, Virginia for Macy’s and JWT NY, which last year won a One Show Entertainment Awards Gold Pencil.

To enter the search, a director must be directing any type of advertising or entertainment content professionally less than 3 years, and work completed between January 2010 and March 2011 was eligible to be entered.

About The New Directors Search / The New Directors Showcase Reel
Each year SHOOT conducts a worldwide search to discover the best up-and-coming directors who, based on their initial work, show promise to soon make major positive contributions to advertising and/or entertainment in its traditional and emerging forms. The search is conducted by SHOOT’s editorial staff with input from advertising agency creative directors & heads of production, as well as production company heads and established directors. This year’s search was conducted from January 1-April 5th, 2010. And last month Ross Katz won the DGA Award for outstanding achievement in movies for TV/miniseries on the strength of his HBO film Taking Chance, the same film which garnered him inclusion in SHOOT’s ‘08 New Directors Showcase. (Katz is available for select spot assignments via TWC.)

To enter the search, a director must be directing traditional broadcast TV commercials less than 2 years (less than 3 years if work has been regional). Directors enter search via offical submission containing “VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE: “Please do NOT enter if you do not fit the criteria!! It’s inevitably discovered if a director has been directing commercials longer than the entry criteria. Disregarding the entry rules is embarrassing for the director and not fair to those who qualify. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in providing this great opportunity to those who fit the entry criteria”. Whether it’s the director him/herself entering or a production executive on the director’s behalf, whoever submits the form, signs the form certifying information submitted is accurate. Submission forms for the 2011 SHOOT 9th Annual New Directors Search will be available on SHOOTonline in late December 2010.

Eighth Annual SHOOT New Directors Showcase: Taking The Leap Of Faith

A SHOOT Staff Report
NEW YORK (SHOOT News), May 14, 2010 — The economy has made ad agencies more receptive to directorial newcomers as cost savings often become increasingly necessary within tighter budget constraints. However, taking the leap of faith to award work to an up-and-coming director requires more than just a talented filmmaker. Ideally, said Lora Schulson, executive director of content production at Young & Rubicam, New York, a new director will have the support of an established production house providing the proper crew and resources. She noted that if the agency has worked successfully with the production company before, there’s a comfort and trust level that makes the agency more willing to break in a new director.

SHOOT’s Di rectors Symposium And 2010 New Directors Showcase: Reflections, Insights, Highlights

Events Span A Wide Range From Aspiring Directors To Lauded Director/Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, From The “Good Enough” Revolution To The High-End Tech Wave

NEW YORK, May 14, 2010 (SHOOT Feature), A SHOOT Staff Report — There was a coming together of two events this past Tuesday (May 11) at the DGA Theatre in New York City–one very much established, the evening’s SHOOT eighth annual New Directors Showcase, and the other being a daytime agenda of sessions during the course of SHOOT’s first Directors Symposium. Overall there was a wide span of schools of thought, talent, technology and content represented at the two sister events, with a common thread being opportunities emerging in varied sectors, from the crossroads of advertising/marketing and entertainment, to the integration of digital and traditional forms of communication, to accessible technology, to mentorship and competitions, to straight-up advice for aspiring directors and DPs.

The latter came from Caleb Deschanel, ASC, during an “In The Director’s/Cinematographer’s Chair” one-on-one Symposium interview session with SHOOT editor Robert Goldrich. Deschanel, a five-time Best Cinematography Academy Award nominee (The Right Stuff, The Natural, Fly Away Home, The Patriot, The Passion of the Christ) advised aspiring artists to look and listen, noting that it’s been said that a writer cannot become great unless he or she is a great reader, learning from other’s work. Similarly an aspiring director or cinematographer must be a great observer–of human behavior…
