Dirt Devil’s “The Exorcist,” viral spot
How did you get into directing?
After my first internship at a production company, I realized a cinema commercial for a local newspaper. Together with a good friend, I developed the idea and also directed the piece. I was 21 years old and it was an incredible experience. Then I knew that I want to tell stories myself.
What is your most recent project?
Right now I’m preparing my third spot at the Filmacademy Baden-Wuerttemberg. It will be a very visual driven idea, shot completely underwater.
What is the best part of being a director?
Sometimes you can play god.
What is the worst part of being a director?
You’re the one who get’s killed if something didn’t work out.
What is your current career focus: commercials & branded content, TV, movies? Do you plan to specialize in a particular genre–comedy, drama, visual effects, etc.?
It would be nice if I could expand my commercial reel in the coming years and try out different genres and also go abroad for a year to gain some international experience. I’ll continue to develop scripts with friends and colleagues and perhaps this will lead to something bigger. I would like to start a “creative collective” where we can realize our own stories.
Have you a mentor and if so, who is that person (or persons) and what has been the lesson learned from that mentoring which resonates most with you?
My parents always say: ”The journey is the destination”.
Who is your favorite director and why?
David Fincher! He started also in commercials / music videos and made his way to the feature side. All of his movies got his own signature. I love intelligent thrillers–I loved Se7en and also The Game. He’s one of my favorite directors.
What is your favorite movie? Your favorite commercial or branded content?
There are many movies that I like e.g. Se7en, The Game, Man on Fire, I Saw the Devil or “Taken” by Pierre Morel, et cetera. To name all the commercials I like would take too long.
Tell us about your background (i.e. Where did you grow up? Past jobs?)
I was born in Hamburg, Germany 1987.
As a young boy I dreamed of becoming a tennis pro, but that’s simply not where life took me. After high school I joined Markenfilm, a well known German production company. Within one year, and after tagging along various film shoots, the advertising universe got me. My love for the moving image was born. Other stations were NDR Television and ad agency Jung von Matt, where I gathered lots of experience. Then I realized what I really wanted to do was to tell the stories himself. In 2009 I joined the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg–where I’m still today.
